- "The Hardy Family" was announced as a new Hal Roach short subject series that was said to begin production on March 25, 1935. The series was announced shortly after Stan Laurel left Hal Roach Studios following a contract dispute. It was stated that the series would star Oliver Hardy, Patsy Kelly, and George McFarland as a family. The announcement for the series was more than likely a studio ploy to get Laurel to come to terms with Roach. This seems logical, as it would have meant separating Oliver Hardy from comedy partner Stan Laurel, Patsy Kelly from comedy partner Thelma Todd, and George McFarland from the Our Gang series. Nevertheless, a pilot short (Their Night Out) was announced with James Horne set to direct.
- Spanky seemed to be the only confirmed character to appear in this short as it's unknown if Alfalfa, Buckwheat or Porky would've made any appearances.
