The Short[]

Plot: Slicker Walburn steals an orange from Stephens Grocery, and Alfalfa gets blamed and punished for it. Believing he's been unjustly labeled a crook, he decides to become one, so Spanky decides to teach him a lesson. Paid twenty-five cents to haul off some junk for Mrs. Wilson, Spanky brings Alfalfa and the gang to "burglarize" her house, but everyone panics as the police pursue a real burglar, and the gang flees to their clubhouse where the police catch up with them. In Juvenile Court at the Greenpoint Courthouse, Spanky brings Mrs. Wilson to rectify the understanding and the judge admonishes Alfalfa's father for spurring the sequence of events. The gang goes for ice cream with the money Spanky earned.
Quotes:

  • "Anything tastes good if you earn it." - Spanky

Notes/Trivia:

  • This short is the first appearance of Freddie Walburn who replaced Tommy Bond as the gang's antagonist.
  • Slicker's technique of stealing oranges by throwing a dart attached to a string into them was first used by Sammy in The Champeen.
  • This short features an appearance by actor Hugh Beaumont, who would go one to play the famous father of two other Rascals on the late Fifties TV-Series "Leave It To Beaver."
  • Al Hill playing the burglar played almost the exact same role with the exact same costume this same year in "The Bank Dick" with W. C. Fields.
  • Robert Blake who plays Mickey Gubitosi appears but isn't credited.
