The Jell-O Gelatin Pops commercials, also known as Jell-O Gelatin Pops Presents The Little Rascals were a series of thirty second television advertisements featuring the Little Rascals. Debuting on television in 1984, the advertisements would regularly feature the Rascals testing out Jell-O flavored Popsicles. Among the children starring in these commercials was up-and-coming actor Seth Green.

History[]

In the Winter of 1983, advertisement producer Michael Hampton sold a television commercial for General Foods' latest product, Jell-O Gelatin Pops. After the advertisement tested poorly, Hampton decided to recreate the the Little Rascals to sell the 'Pops'. With the help of writer Nina DiSesa, a series of thirty second Rascals commercials made their way to television in the Spring of 1984. Featured in the commercials were a group of kids portraying Spanky, Scotty, Buckwheat, Alfalfa, and Darla, and a dog portraying Pete the Pup. A recurring character in these spots was Mr. Bailey, the proprietor of a local grocery store. A free Little Rascals catalog with collectible merchandise, including a line of Little Rascals action figure were offered to coincide with the commercials..

Commercials[]

  • In the first commercial, the Rascals head to a kitchen, and make preparations for a "new snack". "It'll be fruity!", says Alfalfa. "And smooth!", adds Scotty. "And cool!", Darla chimes in. Buckwheat opens the kitchen's freezers to make room for the Rascals' concoction. Inside, he finds a box of Jell-O Gelatin Pops, which contains the same ingredients the Rascals used. After an unseen announcer introduces the product, the Rascals are seen outside of a house, enjoying the Jell-O Gelatin Pops. "They beat us to it!", Spanky says, as the commercial closes.
  • In another commercial, the Rascals build a Jell-O Gelatin Pops stand, with hopes of selling boxes to customers. Spanky arrives to find the other kids eating the product. "Can't help it!", Alfalfa explains. A woman arrives to sample a Popsicle, and immediately requests two more. Spanky opens a nearby freezer to get more Popsicles, but all of the boxes have disappeared. Alfalfa spots something moving behind a fence. The kids look over the fence and find Buckwheat carrying a large stack of Jell-O Gelatin Pops boxes. Buckwheat closes the commercial by telling the audience that the Pops are "irresistible".
  • A later spot finds the Rascals visiting grocery man Mr. Bailey, who explains that he has plenty of Jell-O Gelatin Pops. "But I don't see any raspberry!", replies Alfalfa. Mr. Bailey doesn't understand, until Spanky explains that raspberry is the Pops' latest flavor. Pete grabs a box of Pops from Mr. Bailey, causing the proprietor to angrily chase the Rascals out of his store. Pete closes the commercial with a happy bark.
