The Short[]

Plot: The Rascals are playing baseball when Mickey runs into the street to catch a fly ball and gets struck by a car. As Spanky and the others stand over him, all Mickey can say is that he caught the ball. The accident spurs Spanky to make a pedantic speech about safety and starting the 1-2-3-Go Safety Society to encourage younger kids and adults to take precautions when crossing the street. The school board decides to back the idea along the police commissioner and the mayor who even goes so far as to do a radio broadcast promoting it. When Froggy stands to speak on the radio, his voice causes the microphone wires to explode until he raises the pitch of his voice to a falsetto.

Notes/Trivia:

  • Darla Hood doesn't appear in this short.
  • This short is credited by Maltin and Bann as one of the "heavy-handed" moralizing lessons which "sealed the lid on the coffin of the series."
  • When Mickey gets hit by a car, Billy William Laughlin who plays Froggy will sadly later have that fate in 1948
  • Goof:When the Gang go to Greenpoint Hospital to visit Mickey, they are directed to the Children's Ward on the 4th floor. Unfortunately for the set designers, the doors are marked with the words, "Childrens' Ward".
